Ulexite is an evaporate mineral. It is found in areas that have had oceans or seas that have dried up leaving various salts and minerals behind. It is sometimes known as TV rock because of its ability to transmit light. This mineral forms smooth white rounded crystals. They are made up of parallel fibers that conduct light along their axis. When the ends are polished the crystal acts as a natural fiber optic. Not only is it transparent but whatever image is in contact with the back of the specimen appears to be sitting on the top surface. It will decompose in hot water.
