Tiger Eye is part of the quartz family of minerals. It is a popular mineral for jewelry and ornamental display pieces. It is usually a golden brown color made more attractive by its chatoyancy. Within this matrix are asbestos fibers usually occurring in layers. It is the asbestos that makes Tiger eye a chatoyant gemstone, meaning the fibers (asbestos) of the stone reflect in a wavering silky luster that can resemble the eye of a cat.

It is a form of  silicon dioxide SiO2.
