The incredible fossils From The Petrified Forrest are from the late Triassic Period and are about 225 million years old. At that time this part of Arizona was near the equator on the south western edge of the super-continent of Pangea. The climate was humid and subtropical. The area was a low plain resting between mountains and the sea.
The Petrified Forrest is home to exquisite Petrified wood. The trees that make up most of the Petrified Forest were an extinct conifer called Araucarioxylon arizonicum. In addition at least 9 other species of trees have been identified in this location.There were many other plants and animals whose remains were fossilized there. Gingkos, cycads, lycopods, and fern fossils have all been found in the area. In fact about 200 different plant species have been identified from the fossils collected here! Giant crocodillians called Phytosaurs lived in the forrest of the Triassic and their fossils are found along with amphibians, snails, clams, and even some early dinosaur species.
It is of course illegal to collect specimens from within the boundries of the National Park. This piece was legaly collected on ranch land near the Petrified Forest National Park.
