Description
This plant fossil is from the Metasequoia. It is a redwood tree and ancestor to the giant redwoods of California. Sometimes called The Dawn Redwood, Metasequoia Covered much of North America at the begining of the Tertiary Period 65 million years ago. Since then their numbers have steadily gone down. There is one valley in China where Metasequoia are still found today.
This fossil is from the Oligocene Epoch and is about 30 million years old. It was found in the Salmon City Formation in Lemhi Co, Idaho.
