There were an abundance of graptolites during the early and middle Paleozoic Era. Because of their huge numbers, widespread distribution, and diversity of species they are used as index fossils, helping paleontologists date rock strata. The name comes from the Greek words graptos=written and lithos=stone because many species of graptolites resemble hierogliphics.
