Fossil Collection Oyster

Oyster

oyster

This fossil is called Ilmatogyra arientina. It was a type of oyster. They are commonly called Devil's Toenails because of their unusual curled shape. These animals lived in a vast inland sea that covered central North America during the Cretaceous Period about 85 million years ago. It was found in Tarrant County, Texas. Oysters along with clams, mussels, cockles, and scallops make up the class of mollusks called Bivalvia. This class was once called pelecypods. You may still hear them referred to as such.
