Fern Fossil 22 Mazon Creek

The Fern Fossils from Mazon Creek, Illinois are famous for the quality of fossils found there. This one is from the Pennsylvanian Epoch of the Carboniferous Period and is about 300 million years old. It was found in Francis Creek Shale in the Carbondale Formation. This was the time when the great coal deposits of the world were laid down.
