Butterstone comes from South Africa. It was formed during the Archaen Era 2.5 billion years ago. Butterstone is know to have cyanobacteria fossils embedded within the white and green layers of this sedimentary rock. Cyanobacteria was the first organism to produce oxygen by photosynthisis. The individual cells are microscopic but millions of cells formed colonies consisting of thick slimy mats.

Butterstone is very fine grained and takes a nice polish.
