Blastoids are cousins of the crinoids. They are stalked echinoderms that lived by filtering plankton from the passing seawater.
Blastoids lived throughout most of the Paleozoic Era, from the Ordovician Period till the end of the Permian Period. They became extinct along with so many other species in the Great Dying.
The Blastoids fossils we have for sale here are the heads or theca, that had mouth, anus, and respiritory function. They are from the Missippian sub-period of the Carboniferous Period. They are about 325 million years old. The theca sat atop a long column of circular paltes. The blastoids anchored themselves to the sea floor with a structure called a holdfast.
