"This 13 inch matrix holds a 6 inch polished Orthoceras, from the Devonian Period 395 million years ago, is raised on a plate of black matrix. The fossil literally raises up out of the background plate to bring it to life. There is a second large specimen near the tip of the matrix that shows the crystalization inside the chamber due to the way the polishing occurred. Because the matrix is filled with smaller specimens, there is a feeling of the life that was once present in the ancient seas in which this specimen was found. The tip of the matrix has been repaired."
