This ancient fossilized gastropod Strophstylus cyclostomes is related to living gastropods of today like snails. It comes from the Silurian Period and is about 424 million years old. These fossil gastropods were found in Shelby County, Indiana. They are a little less than 1 inch long. Gastropods can be carnivorous (meat-eaters) or herbivorous (plant eaters). Their tongue is covered with thousands of tiny teeth to tear apart food.
