Desert Rose- Cockscomb Barite (BaSO4) Barite is a sulfate of the element barium. It has many practical uses in the making of paint and paper. It is also used medically in making barium, a substance that appears opaque under x-rays. Barite can be white, yellow, brown, blue, red or colorless. Barite crystals have an orthorhombic shape, which means that it is long and rectangular. The barite crystals on this form of desert rose are a plate-like shape that forms round masses. Barite is common and can be found in many places. Hardness 3-3.5
