Baculites
- Baculite 2.5 inches
Baculite 2.5 inches
This baculite section is 2.5 inches long, 1 inches wide and .75 inches thick. Parts of the outer shell are intact and the feathery suture pattern of ammonites of the late Cretaceous Period can be seen. This fossil was found in the Pierre Shale. Baculites were cephalopods related to ammonites. They are sometimes called walking sticks because of the shape of their shell. They grow in flat spirals when they are young. Then as adults the shell grows straight. Baculites could reach two meters in length.
